Michigan Senior Olympics – Not to be missed!

Michigan Senior Olympics was started back in 1979 with only a handful of participants and has grown to 1100 participants in 2012. Can’t wait to see the number it is up to this year!! There are plenty of ways to participate in the Michigan Senior Olympics such as sponsorship, fundraisers/events, dancesport, ambassadors, and volunteer.

Here is a list of several different sports which are included in the Michigan Senior Olympics. If you are too late to participate this year then start training for next year.

Pickleball is probably the most interesting sport as it is one I had never heard of and so you know I had to look it up. It is a sport which combines badminton, tennis, and ping-pong. They say it is easy to learn and very fast paced. It was invented back in 1965 on Bainbridge Island outside of Seattle, Washington. It was created by 3 fathers whose kids were bored over the Summer. Isn’t that the way most games are created? 🙂 Boredom isn’t a bad thing, is it? The sport has now grown and can be found in Canada and throughout the U.S. I bet the kids who started this game would never have imagined how popular it would become.

Okay. Returning to the subject of this blog, the Michigan Senior Olympics. Here is a schedule of this year’s events. Opening ceremonies were August 11th, but there’s much more to see if you missed that. Unfortunately, badminton and basketball were canceled this year. They will end the year with a Celebration Dinner for the athletes at Steiny’s Restaurant & Banquet Center on Thursday, August 17th.

Have fun!!
